Bedminster Down’s triumphant end to football season
Bedminster Down School’s girls’ football team brought home the County Cup after a 5-0 win on Wednesday 3rd May.
The team are now Gloucester County Champions having already secured the Bristol and South Gloucester final. They were able to dominate the final match against Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School, Wotton-under-Edge in the last time the team will play together.
Most of the girls play competitive football outside of school and are mostly students in their final year at Bedminster Down, with one from Year 7 and one from Year 10.
Supported by PE teacher Claire Liddell, she wrote a special poem to pay tribute to their hard work before the crucial match. Claire said:
“It's been a fantastic five years of football with this special team. They are a talented sporting group of young ladies and have become role models for other girls at Bedminster Down School.
“The girls so wanted to end their school football journey as triple cup winners and they did just that. I’m privileged to be their coach and it was a perfect way to end the last ever match.”
Year 11 striker Rhianna Ben-Carew scored a hatrick last week. She said, “I was really proud to represent Bedminster Down after the disappointment of an early exit from the National Cup. It was reassuring to see that the team who beat us eventually went on to become the national champions.” Goalkeeper Shawna Hannam (also in Year 11) added, “We’re leaving school soon so it’s been great to win just about everything going before we say goodbye.”
